Yoruba divination plate

This oval shaped board is carved with geometric and animal motifs along with an image of Eshu. The Yoruba diviners cover the centre of the divination tray with sawdust,then the diviner evokes the spirits with the help of an ivory or wooden taper and ten throws of sixteen palm nuts, Ikin, or a chain, called Opele, onto the tray. The resulting position of the items thrown reveals the answer to the question asked by the diviner.
